Ways to Use a White Gel Pen

add shine with white gel pen

Do you have a white gel pen sitting in your craft room that doesn’t get used very often? Don’t underestimate this little tool! A white gel pen is one of those supplies that can add amazing details and make your handmade cards look even more polished and professional. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to use a white gel pen so you can get more use out of it.

✨Add Highlights

  • Put tiny dots on flowers for a soft, sparkly look.
  • Add highlights to eyes on animals and characters.
  • Create shine on berries, ornaments, jars, or balloons.

✨ Faux Stitching

  • Draw dashed lines around layers and die cuts.
  • Create stitched borders without using dies.
  • Add hand-sewn details to tags and sentiments.

✨ Create Snow

  • Dot white ink over winter scenes for falling snow.
  • Add snowy accents to trees, rooftops, and branches.
  • Create snowbanks along the bottom of a card.

✨ Enhance Dark Cardstock

  • Write sentiments on black or navy cardstock.
  • Add doodles, swirls, or frames.
  • Make hand-drawn leaves or floral accents.

✨ Add Dimension to Coloring

  • After coloring with Stampin’ Blends, add white lines and dots to:
    • Petals
    • Mushrooms
    • Fruit
    • Animal fur
    • Clothing

✨ Decorate Die Cuts

  • Add veins to leaves.
  • Create woodgrain lines.
  • Draw details on embossed images.

✨ Make Backgrounds

  • Polka dots
  • Stars
  • Snowflakes
  • Tiny hearts
  • Confetti

✨ Add Interest to Sentiments

  • Outline stamped words.
  • Create drop shadows.
  • Draw banners or frames around greetings.

✨ Imitate Embellishments

  • Pearl centers for flowers.
  • Dots around circles and labels.
  • Decorative corners.

✨ Correct Small Mistakes

  • Cover tiny areas where stamping didn’t quite reach the edge.
  • Add a highlight to camouflage imperfections.

A few tips:

  • Scribble on scrap paper first to get the ink flowing.
  • Let alcohol marker coloring dry before adding white details.
  • Use a light touch to avoid scratching the cardstock.
  • Layer dots and highlights after the first layer dries for a brighter white effect.

A white gel pen is especially fun with florals, black-and-white Designer Series Paper colored with Stampin’ Blends, and winter cards. It can add just enough detail to make a card look finished and professionally designed.

I hope I have inspired you to pull yours out and start experimenting.
