Welcome! I am so glad you found me. Today’s tutorial is called a Floating Hexagon Card. It is a little too big to fit in a standard A2 envelope. The finished product does lay flat, and it measures approximately 6 inches by 6 inches so you would need a special size envelope if you were to mail it to someone. I made my Floating Hexagon to be a table centerpiece. I talk more about that in my video tutorial. You can watch me make one using the measurements below. Here is the link to the video tutorial over on my YouTube channel.
Supplies and Measurements
**Two pieces of cardstock (same color)
Note: I used Garden Green cardstock for both of my samples.
6” x 6” cardstock scored at 2” and 4” (this is the back piece of the floating hexagon card)
6” x 6-7/8” cardstock scored at 3/8”, 2-1/2”, 4-1/2”, 6-1/2” (this is the front piece of the floating hexagon card)
**A different color cardstock that coordinates with the first
Note: I used basic white cardstock for my first sample and Pecan Pie cardstock for the second.
5-3/4” 1-3/4” cardstock (3 pieces)
1-3/4” x 1” cardstock (6 pieces)
**DSP (Designer Series Paper or Pattern Paper)
Note: I used Mediterranean Blooms for one sample and A Little Bit Festive for the second floating hexagon card.
5-1/2” x 1-1/2” DSP (3 pieces)
1-1/2” x 3/4” DSP (6 pieces)
**Window Sheets
5” x 1-3/4” Window Sheet (3 pieces)
Tear and Tape Adhesive
Liquid Glue
Paper Trimmer and Scorer
Instructions for the Floating Hexagon Card
- First, adhere the 3 pieces of DSP to the 3 pieces of coordinating cardstock to make the three panels for the back of the hexagon card
- Next, adhere the 6 pieces of DSP to the 6 pieces of coordinating cardstock to make the 6 panels for the front of the hexagon card.
- Then adhere the 3 panels from step 1 to the back piece of the floating hexagon card leaving an equal size border around all 4 sides of each panel.
- Next, cut an opening in the front piece of the hexagon card. Place the 6″ side at the top of the paper trimmer and align the cardstock to the 1-1/4″ mark. Move the blade without cutting yet to the first score line then cut to the bottom score line. Repeat this cut on the opposite side only cutting from the first score line to the last score line. You are left with a slit along the top and bottom of the front piece.
- Then cut along the far left and far right score lines creating an opening where the window sheet panels go. If you need to refer to the video here is the link.
- Adhere your 6 panels to the front piece, three along the top and three along the bottom. Leave a border around all four sides of each panel.
- Flip the front piece over and attach some Tear & Tape adhesive at the top and bottom of the opening of all three panels. Peel the backing off the Tear & Tape and adhere the 3 window sheets evenly spaced between the score lines.
- Next apply Tear & Tape to the back of the 3/8″ narrow strips of cardstock on the left and right side of the front piece.
- Finally, attach the front piece to the back piece. While the front piece is upside down, place the back piece face down on top of the front piece, peel the backing off the Tear & Tape and fold both 3/8″ sides over the top of the back piece.
- Lastly, decorate your window sheets!
