Hello Stampers and Crafters,
Today we are going to get back to basics. Maybe you are a beginner stamper or maybe more experienced but in either case, basic stamping with no frills can be just as appealing and eye catching as a cards with all kinds of fancy techniques, layers and embellishments. So, I want to show you how you can make a great card with just a few basic supplies.
For my examples today, I am using the Stampin’ Up! photopolymer stamp set called “Kite Delight”. It is retiring on June 30th, 2022 which makes me sad because it is such a great set. But you can use any stamp set to get back to basics. So, I would recommend a stamp set with an open design that leaves spaces for you to color inside. I will use three sample cards to walk you through the “back to basics” process and show you just how easy and quick it is to make a card that you can be proud to give away (or keep)!
Back to Basic Supply List
- Paper trimmer/scorer
- Basic White Cardstock
- Any Stamp Set with an open design you can color
- Momento Black ink pad
- Colored markers or pencils
- Some type of adhesive (Tombow, Stampin’ Seal, liquid glue)
- Blending brush (optional)
- Light colored ink pad (optional) to use with blending brush to shade your top layer (I used Bashful Blue)
Back to Basics Steps
- Use your paper trimmer to cut your white card stock so that it measures 8 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches, then score the 8 1/2 inch side in half at 4 1/4 inches. This is your base card.
- Next cut your top layer of white card stock 4 inches by 5 1/4 inches. This step is optional. You can just stamp on the base instead of the layer. As an alternative, you can also use a different color cardstock for your base card and attach the white layer on top. I did that on one of my cards below to coordinate the base card with the ink color used for the kite (Polished Pink), then blue ink for the clouds and yellow ink for the sun and bows on the kite tail.
- Stamp your image/images and sentiment on the white layer. Then color the image(s) with either Stampin’ Write markers, Colored Pencils or Stampin’ Blends. If you make a mistake, no worries, just flip it over and start again. Then as an optional step, you can use the Stampin’ Up! Blending Brush or a sponge and lightly shade the whole sheet with a very light color. Put a piece of paper under you so if you go off the page, the ink doesn’t get all over your work surface. I used a very light shade of blue to look like the sky behind the kite.
- Next, attach the stamped layer to your card base using adhesive making sure to center it.
Boom! You are done! I told you we were going back to basics!! You don’t get more basic than that!
Take it up a Notch
Now for the more experienced stampers, my third card below takes it up a notch!
I stamped three different kite designs on some scraps of white cardstock and colored them different colors using markers. (Don’t you just love to color? It is so relaxing.) Next, I fussy cut the kites and tails using my paper snips. Then I stamped my sentiment and cut the words into separate pieces because I didn’t have enough room on the card to stamp one long sentiment. So, remember you can do that with any sentiment. If the full length of the stamped words are too long for the space on your card, just cut them and attach them to your card vertically instead of horizontally. Next I attached the kites, the kite tails and the words with Stampin’ Dimensionals. Stampin’ Dimensionals are double sided adhesive foam pieces that pop up your image or words for some added dimension. Kind of like a 3D effect. What do you think? Pretty cool, huh?
