Handmade card making and papercrafting tips and techniques

Ten Different Ways to Use Stampin’ Write Markers

markers

During Sale-a-bration which ends February 28th, 2025, when you join my team, you can pick TWO assortment packs of Stampin’ Write Markers from among the four different color families (Subtles, Regals, Brights and Neutrals). That’s 20 markers in total! This got me thinking about all the different ways you can use Stampin’ Write Markers.  The markers are water-based as opposed to the Stampin’ Blends markers which are alcohol based.  So, the best black ink to use along with the Stampin’ Write Markers is the Stazon Jet Black Ink. Below are ten ways you can use these markers.

First Way to Use Stampin’ Write Markers

Create a unique multi-color background by scribbling on a piece of acetate, a window sheet, or a large acrylic block with coordinating colors, spritz the ink with water and lay a piece of cardstock over the top to transfer the colors to the cardstock.  Let it dry before continuing with your project.

Second Way – Color your stamp

What do you do if you don’t have a certain color ink pad? Using the wide tip of the marker brush the color on your stamp.  When you use an ink pad the entire stamped image is the same color but when you use markers you can use multiple colors to ink up your stamp before stamping.

Third Way – Color Coordinate Envelope and signature

Sign your card and address your envelope using the same color marker as the color of ink used to create the handmade card.

Forth Way – Ombre Effect

Create a stripe or pattern with gradual shading from light to dark to create an ombre effect using the Stampin’ Write Markers.

Fifth Way – Splatters and Flicking

There are a couple different ways to create a spatter effect using markers.  The first way is to hold the marker in one hand and tap it against your pointed finger on the other hand until ink splatters onto the cardstock below.  Another way is to take the cap of the marker and flick the tip which will also add splatters of ink spots onto your cardstock for a very cool background effect. Do it very gently so you don’t wreck the tip of your marker.

Sixth Way – Watercoloring

Stamp your image and color it with Stampin’ Write Markers then use a Water Painter to color over the markers and create a watercolor effect.  It also removes any lines left from the markers. It is best to use watercolor paper which is heavier than cardstock and absorbs the water better.

Seventh Way to use Stampin’ Write Markers – Thumping Technique

Ink up a large stamp in one color and then use a different color marker to “thump” ink throughout the stamp.  It’s kind of like a drummer drumming.  You hold the marker similar to a drummer and just thump up and down and all around.

Eighth Way – Coloring Vellum

Use Stampin’ Write Markers to color a stamped image on the backside of the vellum for a soft effect that shows through to the front of the vellum.  Note: Let the ink dry so it doesn’t smear.

Ninth Way – Coloring Ribbon

When you don’t have the right color ribbon to decorate your project you can make it with markers!  Color your white ribbon using a marker. Just lay the ribbon down and hold the marker on its side and slide the wide tip along the ribbon.  Be sure to put some grid paper or scrap paper under the ribbon to protect your workspace and let the ink dry completely before adding it to your project.

Tenth Way – Add Details and Highlights

Use markers to add details, shadowing and highlight various parts of your stamped images. You can also use it to create a border around your stamped image like the one below.

I’m sure there are other ways to use the Stampin’ Write Markers that I am missing but hopefully this list helps you see just how versatile they can be. Stampin’ Write Markers are a must-have tool for any paper crafter, especially if you love cardmaking and stamping. Here are some great reasons to use them:

1. Dual-Tip Design

  • One end has a fine tip for writing, journaling, and detailed work.
  • The other end has a brush tip for coloring, shading, and direct-to-stamp inking.

2. Perfect for Stamping Techniques (like the ones above)

  • Use the brush tip to color directly onto rubber or photopolymer stamps for multicolored images.
  • “Huff” (breathe lightly) on the stamp to reactivate the ink before stamping.

3. Coordinated with Stampin’ Up! Colors

  • Matches Stampin’ Up!’s cardstock, ink pads, designer papers, and embellishments for seamless color coordination.

4. Water-Based Ink

  • Great for coloring images without bleeding through thinner paper.
  • Can be used for light watercolor effects when blended with a Water Painter or Blender Pen.

5. Great for Adding Handwritten Touches

  • Use the fine tip for writing messages, adding dates to memory-keeping projects, or personalizing cards.

6. Budget-Friendly Alternative to Ink Pads

  • If you don’t own every ink pad, markers can be used to ink up stamps in various colors without investing in multiple ink pads.

7. No Mess, No Fuss

  • Unlike traditional stamp pads, markers offer precise control—great for beginners or crafters who want less mess.

8. Ideal for On-the-Go Crafting

  • Lightweight and portable, perfect for travel or crafting on the move.
